CT SCANNING

Industrial Computed Tomography

Applications in Dimensional Inspection

&

Non-Destructive Problem Solving

THE BASICS:  What does an Industrial CT look like?

THE PROCESS:

  • Part is placed on the rotary table

  • The table is rotated 360º (this step takes 5-60 minutes)

  • During rotation, 100’s of images are captured

  • Images reconstructed into 3D dataset

  • Dataset captures all internal and external characteristics.

Example Part & Resulting Data:  Y-Connector

Y-Connector

VOXEL DATA

Non destructive 2-D Cross Sectioning

  • An infinite number of 2-D cross sections can be cut from the 3-D part data

  • Different materials show up as different colors (note how cap compresses rubber washer)

  • Data can be used to confirm assembly fits

  • Data can also be used to check internal characteristics

Non Destructive 3-D Cross Sectional Measurement

  • 3-D part data can be x- sectioned from any orientation

  • Data can be used to confirm assembly fits.

  • Data can also be used to verify if characteristics meet their blueprint specification

  • Green boxes represent features within tolerance. Red boxes represent out of tolerance features.

GD&T Measurement Analysis

  • Using Zeiss Calypso software, we can confirm and report any blueprint dimension.

  • Calypso has a robust GD&T math engine that can evaluate any Y14.5 drawing callout.

  • Data can be reported in endless formats, shown here in an excel spreadsheet.

CT:  Resolution (why is magnification important)

You cannot measure what you cannot see (resolve)

No Magnification (full part scanned)

With Magnification (1/3 of part scanned)

Industrial CT Scanning

  • We’re fast. You receive your first article inspection report in days.

  • We help you save money. The ability to inspect without disassembling, and by expediting the design and development process, allows you save on operating costs.

  • Our process is non-destructive, giving you the ability to inspect internal and external geometry.

  • We don’t require fixturing or clamping forces, which can distort the part.

  • Our process helps you increase production ability with faster prototypes and replications without relying on CAD files.

  • Our X-ray based measurement system is non-contact (no force).

  • Parts do not require potting.

  • We’re accurate. In fact, plastic color and depth-of-feature will not affect accuracy or repeatability, which can be a problem with Part-CAD comparisons.

  • Our process lets you quickly determine whether a part has any critical defects.

  • We provide an option for extensive porosity (voids) and wall thickness reports.
